WHO WE ARE and WHAT WE DO

The South Park Site Stewards are volunteers who regularly monitor prehistoric and historic sites for federal, state and local landowners throughout the South Park area.  Throughout the summer volunteers visit these sites, report conditions to landowners and permanently record the information for future reference. SPSS uses a state-of-the-art electronic GPS system, powered by ESRI, for data collection and reporting.

SPSS also provides outreach to the community through:

  • Public presentations about archaeology in South Park

  • Assisting landowners to identify cultural resources that may exist on their property and direct them to appropriate professionals who can further guide them in protection and preservation

  • Partnering with organizations to provide activities that promote preservation

SPSS has a library and resource and reference materials for the use by Stewards.

There are many opportunities for volunteers, apart from monitoring activities that are important to the mission.
